“El Flash” Castro Fighting in Laredo

Updated: April 10, 2015

One of the Rio Grande Valley’s most popular boxing prospects is scheduled to fight Saturday night in Laredo at the Laredo Energy Arena. Top Rank Boxing Promotions in collaboration with Nord Boxing Promotions will be staging a card in which Jesse Magdaleno (20-0, 15 KO’s) and Oscar Valdez (14-0, 13 KO’s), a pair of blue-chip prospects being groomed for championship status will be fighting in respective bouts. Yet for the second time this year and inside a period of three months, Luis “El Flash” Castro (7-1, 5 KO’s) will be a part of a Top Rank Promotions card which will be featured on UniMas’ popular boxing series “Solo Boxeo Tecate”.

Castro, who hails from Edinburg, was seen in action this past February at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo taking care of business inside the ropes as he dispatched what on paper appeared to be his toughest test to date. Ricardo Alvarado came in with a very respectable record of seven wins against three losses, yet referee Rafael Ramos halted the action at 1:49 of the 4th round to hand Castro the TKO victory.

With the victory Castro made it five wins in a row. Saturday night he will be looking to keep the hot streak going and make it six in a row since his lone defeat in late 2013. He will be facing journeyman Felipe Cordova (10-5) from Brownsville in a scheduled 6-round bout. This will be Castro’s second bout of such length.

Castro is off to a fast start in 2015, a year which could see him surpass a very active 2014 where he fought four times. Considering the pace at which he is currently fighting at remains, it would be no surprise if by the end of this year Castro moves into 8-round bouts. And with such pace, the nickname will also have been earned by the quick advances in his career and not only the quick knockouts he has dealt to his opponents.
